Matthew Lombard is a South African saxophonist and educator who recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of California in Los Angeles under renowned saxophonist, Doug Masek. He is currently saxophone educator at the University of South Africa and Pretoria Boys’ High School, and serves as Founding Director of the South African Saxophone Society. 


Matthew has gained international exposure as a performer and teacher and maintains an active presence as one of South Africa’s leading concert saxophonists. He has performed as chamber musician and soloist in South Africa, North America, China, England, Scotland, Croatia, and Germany. Matthew actively commissions new music from South African composers through the South African Music Rights Organization, and has premiered many of these internationally for conferences and concert series’. In the US, where Matthew has most recently been based, he has performed in New Mexico, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles. Matthew has also been invited to present masterclasses locally and abroad.


As a prominent educator in South Africa, Matthew planned the first National Saxophone Symposium along with the University of South Africa Music Foundation, bringing local and international artists together to give workshops, clinics and master classes in three major cities in the country. This major event took place in April 2014, and recurs annually in major cities around South Africa. 


Matthew is an endorsed artist, supported by Henri Selmer Paris, and plays exclusively on Selmer Paris saxophones, mouthpieces and reeds. Matthew also recently joined the Key Leaves team, endorsing their maintenance products.
